Now, thanks to the patronage of Grupo Andrade Gutierrez, CCR and Grupo Telemar, Brazil is producing the biggest music competition in the history of South America. It is named after Heitor Villa-Lobos, the most important Brazilian composer to date. The competition's aim is to promote and make Villa-Lobos' music known amongst pianists around the world. Eleven outstanding international musical personalities have been selected as jurors, and the goal is to find, select and promote the brightest piano stars of the 21st century. Gay, Professor of Sociology, Chair of the Sociology Department of Connecticut College. Gay will be discussing his most recently published book, Lucia: Testimonies of a Brazilian Drug Dealer’s Woman, (Temple University Press 2005), which documents the life a poor favelada as she struggles to survive in the increasingly violent and divided city of Rio de Janeiro. This life history/biography project was supported by an American Council of Learned Societies grant.
