In 2008 the Brazilian Hour celebrates it’s 30th Anniversary.
Here is a bit of it’s history: The Brazilian Hour celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2008. The Brazilian Hour is produced in a state-of-the-art studio within the Cultural Sector of the Brazilian Consulate in Los Angeles.
The program was first broadcast from KXLU-LA 88.9 FM on the campus of Loyola Marymount University in 1978, where it continues to be aired weekly on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00AM to 10:00AM. It can also be heard live on www.KXLU.com. In l981, the program went from local to national with satellite distribution covering the United States. Currently, the Brazilian Hour can be heard over 30 stations in the US from Alaska to Arizona, to New York, Puerto Rico, and Guam. In l981, the Brazilian Hour went international and was made available for distribution to most Brazilian Embassies throughout the world in Portuguese, English, Spanish followed by French; more recently, a pilot program has begun in Chinese.
The Brazilian Hour became known for introducing different styles of Brazilian music to American audiences, as well as featuring new and established artists. Hundreds of musicians and personalities who have an important role in the Brazilian cultural world have participated on the show; a few of these who have gained universal musical appeal are represented among the following: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Moacir Santos, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Sergio Mendes, Djavan, João Bosco, Oscar Castro Neves, Roberto Menescal, Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, Luciana Souza, Paulo Moura, Lenine, Seu Jorge, Céu, Bebel Gilberto, Eliane Elias, Dori Caymmi, Joyce. Representing the broader Brazilian cultural world: João Cabral de Melo Neto, Roberto Burle Marx, Orlando Villas-Boas, Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, Nelson Pereira dos Santos, Fernando Meirelles, Edson Arantes do Nascimento – Pelé, among many others. The Brazilian Hour also has an Internet site where many recent shows can be heard: www.braziolianhour.org
The Brazilian Hour is hosted and produced by Sergio Mielniczenko. Part of the Brazilian Hour celebrations in 2008 - Djavan's concert at Jhon Ansen Ford Amphitheatre June 13 at 8:00 PM produced by Brazilian Nites Productions. Thanks to all who have supported the Brazilian Hour! |

Homage to Tom Jobim,
He is Antonio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim born the 25th of January 1927 in Rio de Janeiro. He is a quiet and shy musician plunking on the keys of a piano. He is an athlete, always at the beach, however as a result of an accident this son of Ipanema submerges himself into music. He eventually emerges with his signature sound and will leave a mark on the world forever - more info |

10 years without Tom Jobim

Brazilian Popular Music: An IntroductionIn
my view, Brazilian popular music began at the precise moment when,
in the slave quarter of a mansion somewhere, the Indians started
to imitate the slaves as they clapped their hands and the white
colonizers abandoned themselves to the magical, mellifluous singing
of the slave women. This admixture, sensually and slowly matured
over four centuries, gave rise to the choro in Rio de Janeiro, a
period in which the maxixe, the frevo and the samba also began to
emerge.
Since then, the hundred years which began with the Abolition of
Slavery in 1888 and the Proclamation of the Republic in 1889, have
witnessed the consolidation of a cultural revolution that has brought
us redemption: the dramatic ascent and shaping of Brazil's mulatto
civilization. And from it sprang that civilization's firstborn,
its most cherished and all-embracing daughter, Brazilian popular
music. http://www.brazil.org.uk/mpb/indexen.htm |

/ Caminho do mar
a musa desta canção.

Daniella Thompson is an American journalist specialized in Brazilian music - one of the best - and her website and blog are great sources of information on the subject.
She was invited by her friend Eddy Pay, who programs and presents Early Morning Music on Berkeley's KPFA 94.1 FM - the first community supported radio station in the USA, founded in 1949 - to create a program about Ary Barroso, one of the best and best known Brazilian composers. Well, she created two one-hour excellent programs. You may listen to them by clicking on the program names below:
I hope you'll enjoy the programs as much as I did and I hope Daniella will bring us more programs about Brazilian music. You can listen to other programs she did before by clicking here . I suggest you to visit her website and her blog for lots of information on Brazilian music.

to help break the cycle of poverty in Brazil
|
Bahia Street was founded in 1997 to help break the cycle of poverty in Brazil.
We provide the means for promising young women from the favelas, or shantytowns,
of Salvador, Bahia, to receive high quality education that prepares them for careers.
Armed with a good education and a good job, these women can then help their families
and communities break the cycle of poverty. |

The Latin American Microfilm Project (LAMP) at the Center for Research
Libraries (CRL) has been funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to digitize
executive branch serial documents issued by Brazil's national government during
the period between 1821 and 1993, and by its provincial governments from the earliest
available for each province to the end of the Empire to 1889. The project provides
Internet access to these documents to facilitate their scholarly use and thereby
enhances Latin Americanist scholarship within the Hemisphere-wide initiative sponsored
by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The Brazilian documents were scanned
from microfilm copies of the originals. The images are stored as GIF and TIFF
images in the Center for Research Libraries' Electronic Document Storage and Distribution
Facility. The GIF images, at a resolution of 100 dots per inch (d.p.i.), are viewable
using web browsers such as Mosaic and Netscape. The TIFF 300 d.p.i. images offer
greater clarity, but require a TIFF viewer for use. When GIF images are not legible,
click on the "300-d.p.i. TIFF image" found at the top and bottom of
the screen. The TIFF image will load automatically in the TIFF viewer you have
installed. If the image is illegible in the TIFF format, the reader's only recourse
is paper copies. IMPORTANT: Make sure that your video driver is at least at a
resolution of 600x800 to allow for the appropriate formatting of the text images.
